Dr. Mojo: Meet the band

Paul Gutierrez - Lead Guitar

Paul was born and raised in East LA. His smokin' guitar playing helped his band "The Pimps" win enough votes to be named the "Best Unsigned Band" in Los Angeles. Another one of his bands won an Honorable Mention at the Monterey Blues Battle of the Bands. Paul has played at many venues including Eli's, The Saloon, Lou's Pier 47, JJ's Blues Lounge and the Mojo Lounge in the Bay area, and down south at the Viper Room on Sunset and the Belly-up Tavern in San Diego.

Gerry Della Bona - Keyboards

Out of the frying pan and into the fire, Gerry arrived on the blues-drenched improvisational rock scene of San Francisco in the early 60s. Applying a passionate playing style of the Hammond B3 to the relentless pursuit of the groove quickly lead to a tour with Steppenwolf, session and recording work with Fred Catero and David Rubinson, then still more session work at Music Annex which led to a CD with Huey Lewis. There followed a succession of countless touring and performing bands including 9-piece salsa/latin group, progressive rock, hard rock, blues, real book and fusion jazz. Humorous stories, you bet! Too numerous to mention, but he’ll gladly share a few over a pint of Guinness. Gerry is happy to be a part of the Dr. Mojo vibe, and looks forward to meeting you at the shows.

Kathleen Leake - Vocals

Kathleen began her performance career singing into her flashlight/microphone to Donny and Marie records. After her realization that Donny and his purple socks would not marry her, she expanded her musical interests to…um…The Bee Gees and Donna Summer. Since then she has performed in many classical choirs, musicals and rock and blues bands. But she is still “a little bit country and a little bit rock ‘n roll.”

Rick McFarland - Bass Guitar

Rick, a sloppy blues guitarist, recently switched to bass to play more gigs. He has played with numerous bands over the past 25 years...many obscure and one named after a ten dollar flea market amplifier "The Olson". Rick also plays acoustic-style blues guitar and national steel guitar. Bass is his main instrument at this time, as he looks after the bottom end and keeps Dr. Mojo regular....

Dominic Haigh - Drums

Dominic started playing drums in a company band with some very tolerant work colleagues - those he played with and those in the fallout zone - about fifteen years ago. Remarkably, they still jam together sometimes ... he has since studied with John Xepoleas and Shaun McGonegal, and played in a number of local bands and various clubs around the Bay area.

Brett May - Tenor Sax

Over the last 25 years Brett has played with The Four Tops, Lionel Hampton, and 10 other acts now lost in the mists of obscurity. He has played in many interesting places including behind chicken wire at a "country western supper club", through the stadium PA at a college football game, on Bourbon street in New Orleans, and in the Ed Sullivan Theater in New York.

Brett has also played funk wearing any number of unflattering costumes including a "gimp" bondage outfit complete with dog collar, a golden afro with pink hip huggers, a baby-blue tuxedo, a rasta santa suit, and, most humiliatingly of all, his high school marching band uniform.
